Recycling in Thailand

If you are elderly or poor or both, then in Thailand one subsistence path open to you is recycling. Glass, plastic, cardboard are the main three materials that people look for. In our road one older woman checks out rubbish up and down the road, she is by far the most energetic collector of plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, beer bottles etc. What I have never see before is the people who collect and pay for the stuff

Out of the doors one afternoon the sight of this vehicle loomed as it rolled slowly by.

Then the process began.

The scales came out

Items were weighed

The large sack of plastics was filled and sewn up.

Calculations were made.

Everything loaded on to the truck, now rearranged to accommodate the new recyclables and, having paid out the money, they were off.

The women calculated the money and drove the truck. Everyone was happy although I assume the family with the truck were making the serious money. What I was impressed by was the speed, efficiency and good humour with which this operation took place.  And of course then the recycling begins again.

I hope you enjoyed this story of everyday life. Thanks for reading.
